Health advice
- Pre-conception
Conception is a complex process and depends on everything
working properly at a number of stages. The woman’s
hormone balance must be correct so that the egg develops
normally. Secondly, the woman must be ovulating so that
the egg is released. Thirdly, you must have sex at the
right time in the cycle, and in addition, the man’s
sperm must be healthy to be able to reach the egg and
fertilise it.
So there are a number of things that can go wrong. Equally,
there are a number of areas that can be boosted by the
right nutrition.
You are what you eat, and if you put poor quality fuel
into the very intricate engine that is your body, it may
run for a while, but will eventually become less productive
and less efficient. You need ‘top-grade’ fuel
to produce healthy eggs and sperm to make healthy babies.
To help you get started, here are some general nutrition
guidelines:
Eat your greens
- Fruit and vegetables are rich in a variety of vitamins,
minerals and other important nutrients needed for many
body functions, including producing healthy eggs and
sperm.
- Choose organic as much as you can to avoid excess
exposure to pesticides and other chemicals which can
cause mutation in sperm.
Say no to coffee, alcohol, tobacco and other stimulants
- Drinking as little as one a half cups of coffee a
day has been linked to delayed conception.
- Alcohol and cigarettes rob the body of many important
nutrients. Smoking can also reduce sperm count and impair
motility.
Avoid ‘nutrient robbers’
- Avoid foods high in saturated fats, junk foods, pre-packaged
meals, sugar and salt which all deplete the body of
the nutrients needed for conception.
It can also be helpful to see a qualified nutritional
therapist to get a personalised plan that focuses on your
particular requirements. Both you and your partner will
benefit from a thorough health assessment and support
that’s tailor-made to your needs. And let’s
face it, with optimum health and good energy levels making
healthy babies is also easier and more fun! Do get in
